Ahhh… North Bay, the largest city near Lake Nipissing. From the shorelines, to ski hills to the city’s rich history displayed on almost every block downtown, there are at least a few things you have to check out here, even if you are just driving by.
1. Sports Galore!
There is no shortage of sports entertainment when visiting North Bay (Both Summer and Winter). If you happen to be in North Bay during the winter, you could easily spend the day at Laurentian Ski Hill. The Ski Hill has amazing views and all skill levels are welcome! After a long day at the ski hill, why not take in an Ontario Hockey League (OHL) North Bay Battalion game! Depending on the schedule, most games will be around 7pm local time (EST) making it a nice way to wrap up your day! During the summer months, go mountain biking at the Three Towers Mountain Bike Trails. Thrill seekers are going to love this stop!
2. Beach Day at Shabogesic Beach
Shabogesic Beach is North Bay’s main public beach. Plenty of space to relax, soak up the sun and enjoy the day in the water! If you have the family, there is a nice playground nearby for any youth. If you have a group of friends, there are many recreational areas around such as beach volleyball and canoe/kayak rentals.
3. Get a taste of history at the North Bay Museum
Just being present in downtown North Bay, it feels like you are standing in the past. For history enthusiasts, this is likely number one on your list because there are many stories to be told about North Bay. In addition to the stories, many items are well preserved and published for public viewing.
4. Hike at Duchesnay Falls Trails
Technically Duchesnay Falls Trails is not in North Bay, however, it is very close and I will put it on my list. Most admirable in autumn because of the beautiful fall foliage, this spot definitely sparks joy inside and can be a great outing for exercise. The main view of course is the falls itself, there are many great spots to take in what nature has to offer! This will be a great spot for any photographer wanting to capture a nice flowing water stream down rocky falls. Caution: Be careful if attending in the spring. The waterfalls can be quite strong due to the spring run-off.
5. Walk along at Golden Mile Beach (Goulet Golden Mile)
Near Shabogesic beach is the scenic Golden Mile beach adjacent to Memorial Drive along the waterfront. You can walk north from Lee Park to the Heritage Railway and Carousel Company and back. Take your time and enjoy a calm walk with the lake wind blowing in your face. The relaxing walk can easily last 2 hours for a round trip as stated above. Depending on what time of the day it is, you could catch a breathtaking sunset!
6. Rent a cottage for the weekend at Four Mile Bay
Approximately 20 minutes from North Bay, via Highway 63 Trout Lake Road and Peninsula Road, is Four Mile Bay. Just past Portage Park, you can reserve a cottage via Canada Rental Cottage and enjoy a quick summer weekend escape! There are plenty of lakeside activities, so bring your friends and family and have a great time!
